One restaurant that is located in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Washington DC that you might consider visiting is:

Kinkead’s

2000 Pennsylvania Ave NW
Washington, DC 20006

As our server seeated us near the window that faces Pennsylvania Avenue we were told that the President’s motorcade goes by here often and that in fact it had gone by here earlier today.     While this restaurant may seem formal, it is pretty much relaxed and the prices for DC seemed reasonable.

Kinkead’s is one of those restaurants’s that has one dish that stands out and is the only reason for visiting.   At Kinkead’s that dish is the Pepita Crusted Salmon with Cilantro and Chiles which is served on a bed of Crab, Shrimp and Corn Ragout.

The Pepita is excellent.   In most cases, salmon is either dry or melt in your mouth delicious.  At Kinkead’s the crust of pumpkin seeds accented the perfectly cooked and moist salmon.  The Ragout was a perfect companion to the salmon and my only complaint was that I enjoyed the ragout so much that I was left wanting more.

Another nice thing about Kinkead’s is its location.   There is nothing better than enjoying a great diner with friends and then strolling down Pennsylvania Avenue.

If you are looking for a night out with friends while in the DC area and you enjoy seafood, then Kinkead’s comes highly recommended.

Terry’s Turf Club in Cincinnati

We’re big fans of the Food Network and when Guy Fieri took a detour on his quest for Cincinnati to grab a burger at Terry’s Turf Club we had to do the
same thing.

The first thing you notice about Terry’s Turf Club is that the location seems to be in a rough part of town.  That notwithstanding, as you drive down Eastern Avenue, you’ll not miss this place as the neon signs stick out as though you were in a mini-version of Las Vegas.

Our party opted to be seated at the bar and we were glad we did as we spent time talking with Terry’s brother Tom.  Tom explained to us that Terry’s has been open for about four years and the decor is from the things that Terry has collected over the years.  You’ll see lots of neon signs and three 1950′s refrigerators that are shaped like bottles.   Tom explained that Terry has several more — not just the three that are in the restaurant.

While we waited for our order to be cooked to order, we snacked on the complimentary peanuts — leaving the shells on the bar.   We quickly found out that we should just be throwing those shells on the floor as Terry came over with a vintage dust buster and cleaned up after us.    We got the message:  floor okay, bar not okay.

Although you could come here just for the decor or the conversations with the wonderful staff, we came here for the Guy Fieri burger: a burger with mushrooms, swiss-cheese, grilled onions and a burgundy wine reduction sauce served on a large buttery and golden bun.

Although I normally order my burgers medium-rare, this one was medium to well.  But, I have to say that it was tender and very flavorful.

While I’m very picky about my french-fries, the other members of our party loved the fries.   I found them to be good, but then again, I’m very picky.

Worth the visit and the drive (about 7.5 miles from downtown)?

Absolutely!

Roger’s Tip:  If your party is small enough, sit at the bar and ask the server for suggestions.
