If you’ve heard of only one dining establishment in Owensboro, Kentucky then you’ve probably heard of Moonlite Barbecue. Not only has Moonlite been around for a long time, they’ve done an excellent job of creating a BBQ menu that allows guests to sample not only BBQ pork, beef and chicken, but also BBQ mutton. And, if that’s not enough, they’ve got some great sides which include cheesy mac ‘n cheese, baked beans, potato salad, corn and too many other great sides to list here.
But, as a visitor to the Owensboro area, you may not realize that Owensboro has some of the best places to dine in Western Kentucky. We’ve spent the last several weeks visiting every single one of them (and sometimes more than once) to give you this list of the best places to eat in Owensboro, Kentucky.
Note that we’ve intentionally left out the chain restaurants as you’ve probably “been there, done that” or can easily look them up in the yellow pages if you are craving riblets from Applebees or a Concrete Mixer from Culvers.

Just a short drive from Louisville, KY you’ll find a southern style buffet that you must try:
Paula Deen Buffet at the Horseshoe Casino
11999 Casino Center Dr SE
Horseshoe Southern Indiana Casino
Elizabeth, IN 47117
Paula Deen’s Buffet is conveniently located in the lobby of the Horseshoe Casino which is adjacent to the parking garage. This, of course, breaks all the rules for a casino as the answer to any question (where is the Steak Restaurant?, the buffet?, the restrooms?, my hotel room, etc) at any Las Vegas Casino is always answered with: “through the casino!”
What makes the Paula Deen buffet worth the visit and worth the drive if you are coming from any of the local municipalities are the recipes used to create the dishes as well as items that you will never find at any other buffet.
Let’s start with the recipes. First, Paula Deens fried chicken and collard greens. Expertly seasoned and moist chicken and flavorful collard greens. You’ll also find yourself going back for seconds for Paula’s baked beans and sweet potatoes.
Then there are dishes that you won’t find anyplace else including cheeseburger meatloaf and giant stuffed green peppers.
Paula Deen’s Buffet also includes several carving stations. On the night I was there I found a Prime Rib carving station (with all the sauces) and a link sausage and whole chicken carving station. Unlike a lot of buffets, I didn’t feel cheated by the serving sizes — they were larger than normal.
On weekends the buffet is a seafood buffet which, in addition to snow crab legs, includes oysters, cajun fish, peal and eat shrimp and more.
Yes, it’s a bit pricey on weekends, but if you are looking for southern style food and excellent food quality — this place is worth the trip.
Roger’s Tip: Never gamble hungry!
