The Surf Restaurant located at:

207 Main Street
Nashua, NH
603.595.9293

Calls itself “Serious Seafood” and according to the menu this means that the seafood is fresh and arrives daily from the local pier. Now one would think that seafood this fresh would mean a menu that is printed daily. However, aside from the specials, the menu is pretty much the same from week to week and includes such dishes as “Sesame Seared Tuna”, “Crab and Lobster Risotto” and “Portuguese Seafood Stew (Cod, mussels, clams, scallops and shrimp with chorizo sausage simmered in a white wine and tomato sauce).

On this visit we only had the opportunity to try one entree — the one pound “Lobster Kristina”. The center piece of this dish is a shucked Maine lobster that has been flambéed in cognac and is served in a cream and butter sauce. We were pleasantly surprised at how well the cream and butter sauce accented the Lobster. Not over powering and not too sweet. This dish combined with the excellent service and light live music coming from the baby grand piano made this experience one in which we will want to repeat next time we are in or near Nashua, New Hampshire.

I recently had the great pleasure of visiting Buckly’s Great Steaks. The historic home to this restaurant is located at:

438 Daniel Webster Highway, Route 3
Merrimack, NH 03054
tel: 603.424.0095

As you drive up to this fantastic restaurant (yes, fantastic) the first thing that you will notice is the building which looks like a farm house. Once inside you may either be seated in the bar or in the dining room — complete with white table cloths?

While you will enjoy the atmosphere, you will take pleasure in the dining experience even more. Our party tried many of the entrees and I can personally recommend the 14oz Sugar Cured New York Sirloin ($31). I chose medium rare for my entry along with a side of asparagus with Hollandaise. The steak was perfectly prepared and the asparagus was a nice accompaniment. If you are not a big fan of asparagus you may choose from one of fifteen different sides including a baked potato, sautéed mushrooms or sliced tomatoes.
Our party also ordered the Roasted Garlic and Coffee Rib-eye ($28) which is served with a red wine demi gaze plus a maple espresso reduction. We also tried the Lobster Pasta which turned out to be a favorite – although each of these entrées we re-ordered on subsequent visits.

Even though there was more than six inches of snow on the ground while we were in New Hampshire, there was a fire in the fireplace and a warm place for us at the table at Buckley’s Great Steaks.
